Outgoing Introvert

I learned something new today. I was under the impression we tend to classify people as either introverts or extroverts and I believe I land somewhere in the middle. I actually saw myself as an “outgoing introvert.”

I know that sounds shocking to those who know me since I have so many opinions and I’m always trying to make people laugh, hence “outgoing.” But sometimes, I crave quiet time where I can recharge and not feel I have to “be on,” so to speak, hence “introvert.” And in situations that are new to me and/or when I’m stepping out of my comfort zone, I’m actually shy, which lends to me being more of an introvert, although shyness is a personality trait and is not necessarily prevalent amongst all introverts.

But upon doing some research, I discovered the term “ambivert,” which is defined as a person whose personality has a balance of both introvert and extrovert characteristics. According to https://health.clevelandclinic.org/ambivert, two-thirds of us may be considered ambiverts and I think this best describes me.

The Cleveland Clinic states:

“Introverts are energized by being alone with their thoughts. Extroverts are fueled by spending time with other people.

Ambiverts can come to life in either situation. They can ‘turn it on’ when called to. But they also know when to pull back for times of quiet introspection.”

So, if an ambivert is in a situation where there is no extrovert leading a conversation, the ambivert will take on the role of the extrovert. But the ambivert can also be an excellent listener, so it’s kind of a win-win.

Where do you land on this personality scale?
