Zoom-Zoom-Zumba

I guess we’re lucky to have it drilled into our brains constantly how important it is to exercise, especially as a senior. (Man, I hate that word now. It used to be awesome when you were a senior in high school or college, but now? Ugh.)

And exercising really is extremely important as it keeps our muscles strong, our bodies flexible, helps with weight control, maintaining balance, etc. It’s like training for the fall you’re eventually going to take, but knowing you’ll come out of it only slightly hurt.

Oh my, this blog isn’t going in the direction I had planned.

Okay, so finding exercises you enjoy doing can be helpful in keeping you on track and my personal favorite is Zumba. An hour of shaking my hips and chest is my idea of great fun, primarily because I love to dance. Secondly, because I like to feel sexy and I don’t get many opportunities to feel that way anymore, but I do in Zumba. And I’m not alone.

There are women ranging from teenagers to (e-e-k) seniors, some of them very senior, who are out there doing their thing. They’ve got their best workout clothes on (although the young ones have more off than on) and they’re swinging their hips, shaking their boobs, and bouncing their butts to Latin music and oldies and current top hits. Sometimes, I feel as if I’m ready for a dance recital as some of the moves can be a bit complicated until you learn them, which on the average, is about three sessions.

So, Zumba is good for flexibility, strengthening bones, cardio endurance, brain function (memorizing those dances is challenging), and emotional well-being.

There are even a few men who attend and I’m always taking a quick glance over to see how they’re handling some of the more female-driven gyrations, and they do just fine.

After all, who doesn’t enjoy feeling sexy?
